BATESVILLE, Ark. - The UALR soccer team won its lone exhibition match of the season on Monday in come-from-behind fashion, topping Lyon College by a 2-1 final in Batesville, Ark. The Scots jumped out to an early lead with a goal in the 12th minute of the match, but the Trojans found the equalizer just five minutes later before netting the game-winner late in the second half.
Chandler Rae put the Scots on the board at the 11:26 mark to score the first goal for either team. Rae took a pass from Monica Ayala and beat freshman Shantel Wittke to give the Scots an early 1-0 advantage.
It didn't take long for the Trojans to answer, as junior Holly Holland finished off a feed from newcomer Paige Mason to make it 1-all at the 16:17 mark.
Holland is coming off a sophomore season that saw her collect two goals and an assist, while Mason will be playing her first season with the Trojans after spending her freshman and sophomore campaigns at Fresno City College.
The Trojans controlled the ball for the remainder of the opening period, pelting the Scots with 16 shots alone in the first 45 minutes of play. UALR's aggression on offense continued into the second half. The Trojans again dominated the shot count, putting up 20 shots - compared to just one for the Scots - in the closing half. The Trojans' persistency was rewarded in the 82nd minute, when sophomore Alyson Rohane scored the game-winner off a pass from sophomore Ariel Galletti at the 81:43 mark.
Rohane and Galletti were both major contributors to the UALR offense as freshmen a year ago. Rohane scored two goals and led the team with four assists, while Galletti finished the season as UALR's leading scorer with nine points on four goals and an assist.
The Trojans finished the tune-up with a 36-4 advantage in total shots, including 21-1 in shots on goal. Rohane led all players in shots (nine) and shots on goal (eight) for the match. Mason put up six shots in all, three on frame. Holland and freshman Ashley Asuncion each got off four shots in the match.
UALR also led in corner kicks, 7-0.
Wittke played the entire match between the pipes for the Trojans but faced just the one shot by Rae in the 12th minute of the match. Stephanie Spiteri played all 90 minutes in goal for Lyon, finishing the match with 13 saves.
UALR will now begin preparing for its first regular season match of the season on Friday, when they travel to Springfield, Mo., to take on Missouri State. In last year's season opener, UALR topped MSU by a 3-1 count at Burns Park.
First kick is slated for 7 p.m. on Friday.
