LITTLE
ROCK
- Western Illinois (2-1-0) defeated UALR (0-3-0) by a 4-1 final score on Sunday
at the Coleman Sports & Recreation Complex, outshooting the Trojans by a
30-6 count, including 21-3 in shots on goal. Sophomore Alyson Rohane scored UALR's lone goal of the match off a helper
from senior Jenna Brady in the first
half.
UALR continued its struggles on the offensive end of
the field, putting up just six shots in the match and finding itself on the
short end of a 9-4 tally in corner kicks. Sophomore Lexus VanPelt led the Trojans with four shots in the match, while
Brady and Rohane each chipped in one apiece. VanPelt also led the Trojans by
accounting for two of the team's three shots on goal.
Making her second start of the season in goal, junior Natalie Marsh stopped 17 Western
Illinois shots to finish the match just two saves shy of the single-game school
record - 19 by Heather Friedman in the 2000 season. Marsh allowed four scores
while playing all 90 minutes in today's contest.
Seeing her first action of the season, Laura Atkinson
played all 90 minutes for WIU and finished the match with one stop.
The Trojans allowed the Leathernecks to build a quick
lead, as Abby Davis put back a rebounded shot that was set up by a Kellie Julius
free kick just two minutes into the match. Julius served up the free kick to
Marsh, who made the initial stop but was unable to corral the ball. Davis
finished the play in traffic to give WIU the lead.
UALR answered with Rohane's score at the 10:22 mark.
Brady let go of a shot near the far side of the 18-yard box, which Rohane was
able to get a piece of to head in the Trojans' first score of the match. The goal
knotted the score at 1-all and was Rohane's first goal of 2012.
Western Illinois added another score at the 38:03 mark
on a penalty kick by Sarah Hall. After being pulled down in the box by a UALR
defender, Hall went top-right 90 to beat Marsh and regain the lead for the
Leathernecks.
WIU would add one more score before the first-half horn
sounded to take a 3-1 lead into intermission. Just over two minutes later at
the 40:41 mark, Skyler Jessop and Hall ran a textbook give-and-go out in front
of the net to give the Leathernecks a two-goal cushion. Jessop pushed the ball
forward to Hall, then darted past the UALR defense just as Hall slid the ball
back. Jessop finished the play by beating Marsh to the right side of the net.
Jessop's goal capped a first half that saw Western
Illinois outshoot the Trojans 17-4 and 12-2 in shots on goal.
Sloane Levin added an unassisted goal at the 60:42 mark
to give the Leathernecks their fourth and final score of the match.
UALR kicks off a three-match road swing with a trip to
Oxford, Miss., to take on Ole Miss on Friday, Aug. 31. The Trojans won't play
at home again until Sunday, Sept. 9 when they host UAPB at the Coleman Sports
& Recreation Complex.
