NEW ORLEANS - UALR sophomore outside hitter Edina Begic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) has been named the first Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week for volleyball in a vote by conference head coaches on Monday (Aug. 27). This past weekend at the Memphis Invitational, UALR fell in four sets to Eastern Michigan before toppling Austin Peay in five and Memphis in straight sets.
Begic had a stellar weekend by reaching double digits in all three matches in kills and digs. She now has 14 double-doubles in 34 matches for her career.
In her first match against Eastern Michigan, Begic rebounded after a tough first set to post great numbers the rest of the game. With only one kill and two errors and two digs in set one, she finished the match with 16 kills on only one error with 10 digs over the final three frames. Begic exploded with 25 kills and 17 digs against Austin Peay.
In UALR's straight set win over Memphis, Begic registered 13 kills with only one error on 28 attempts with 12 digs. Defensively against the Tigers, she added five assisted blocks. For the season, she leads the team in kills (55), kills per set (4.58) and is second on the team in blocks (11) and hitting percentage (.304).
UALR returns to action this weekend when it travels to Springfield, Mo. for the Missouri State Adidas Invitational. First match for the Trojans is set for noon on Friday (Aug. 31).
