CONWAY, Ark. - UALR (0-5-0) trailed 2-0 at the half and was unable to get any closer for the remainder of the match, as UCA (6-1-0) tacked on two more scores over the final 45 minutes to win by a 4-1 final at the Bill Stephens Track/Soccer Complex on Wednesday. Junior Paige Mason scored her first goal as a Trojan early in the second half for UALR's lone goal of the afternoon.
Mason's score came at the 56:15 mark with the Trojans trailing 3-1. The Fresno, Calif.-native took a pass from sophomore Ariel Galletti and beat the UCA keeper from close range to pull the Trojans within two. The assist was Galletti's first of the year.
That would be as close as UALR would get, as UCA's Brooke Ballard netted her third score of the season just five minutes later (61:39) to push the Bears' lead back to three and bring the match to its 4-1 final score.
For the match, UCA led in shots, 23-9, and shots on goal, 11-6. The Bears took four corner kicks in the game, compared to one for the Trojans. Neither team was whistled for a foul in the match.
Mason and freshman Ashley Asuncion led the Trojans with two shots each.
UALR started freshman Shantel Wittke at goalkeeper for the second-straight match and third time this season. Wittke made four saves and allowed four scores in 68:53 of work. Junior Natalie Marsh came on in relief for the final 21:07 and made three saves.
For UCA, Kelsey Gochnauer played the entire first half before Lyndzey Goff came on in relief for the second. Gochnauer allowed no goals and made four stops, while Goff allowed one goal and made one save.
The Bears put up their two scores on ten shots in the opening half. On the first goal, Adriana Lucur sent a cross to Maddi Poteet, who then played the ball to Alexandra Wurst. Wurst finished with a shot past Wittke from five yards out at the 5:03 mark to give the Bears an early 1-0 advantage.
Vanessa Randall added an unassisted goal at the 37:15 mark to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. After breaking away from the UALR defense, Randall's initial shot was saved by Wittke. But the rebound came right back to Randall, who finished on a second try from close range to push the UCA lead to two.
The Bears led 10-6 in shots in the opening half, including 5-4 in shots on goal. Wittke made three stops over the first 45 minutes. UCA's Gochnauer stopped all four shots she faced.
Lucur added the Bears' third goal of the match at the 50:15 mark off a helper from Elizabeth Brady.
UALR will next play at Louisiana Tech on Friday at 4 p.m. The Trojans then return home to face UAPB on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 2 p.m.
