LITTLE
ROCK
- The UALR soccer team (1-6-0) picked up its first win of the season in
dominant fashion, pounding UAPB (1-7-0) with 49 shots, including 25 on goal, in
a commanding 4-0 win against the Golden Lions on Sunday at the Coleman Sports
& Recreation Complex. Sophomore Alyson
Rohane led the Trojan offense with 16 shots and one goal on the afternoon.
Sunday's outing was by far the most impressive of the
season for the Trojans. UALR put up season highs in virtually every offensive
category, including goals (4), assists (2), points (10), shots (49), shots on
goal (25) and corner kicks (12). Rohane's score capped a day that also saw
goals from junior Ashley Barksdale,
sophomore Ariel Galletti and senior Jenna Brady.
Freshman Shantel
Wittke got the start for the Trojans in goal and combined for her first
career shutout with junior Natalie Marsh.
Wittke played the first 59:23 while making two stops; Marsh came on in relief
for the final 30:37 and stopped one shot.
Alyssa Cobbs played the entire 90 minutes in goal for
the Golden Lions, finishing with 21 saves while allowing four scores.
UAPB put up three shots on the afternoon, all of which
were on target. Celeste Carrera led the way with two shots.
Rohane led the Trojans in shots, followed by Galletti
(9), sophomore Kailie Holloway (8)
and sophomore Paige Mason (6).
Barskdale's goal got the Trojans started in the ninth
minute of the match. The Little Rock-native beat Cobbs unassisted to the
upper-right 90 to give UALR an early lead.
"I received the ball from one of our center defenders,
and we practiced yesterday on receiving the ball across our body and dribbling
up the line or passing to my outside, Paige (Mason)," said Barksdale. "She had
moved and I saw that there was space so I just dribbled in. Coach (Delgado) had
been harping on me to take some shots, so I just took it."
Barksdale finished the match with two shots, both of
which were put on target.
The Trojans were unable to add another goal before
halftime, but did pelt the Golden Lions with 25 shots over the first 45
minutes. UALR put 10 of their shots on frame in the first half.
The UALR offense stayed aggressive to start the second
half, finally getting their second goal at the 76:24 mark from Galletti. The
score was set up by a shot from freshman Ashley
Asuncion, who forced the UAPB keeper to leave her feet for the save. The
rebound stayed in the box, and Galletti swooped in to finish the play and give
UALR a 2-0 advantage.
The assist was Asuncion's first of her career.
Brady's score came on a penalty kick at the 76:24 mark.
VanPelt was pulled down in the box, and Brady was called on to finish the play.
The senior went lower left for the score, increasing UALR's margin to three.
"It was actually something we had never really talked
about," said Brady, on her being the one to take the penalty kick. "But I'm
very comfortable with taking PKs. I've practiced it a lot, and I wanted a goal,
and I had confidence in myself."
UALR tacked on its final score at the 84:21 mark, as
Rohane capped her 16-shot night with her second goal of the season. Rohane
received a pass from Galletti and beat Cobbs lower-right from about 15 yards
out, straightaway for the final score.
UALR will try to carry this momentum over to their next
matchup, when they host Northwestern State on Friday, Sept. 14. First kick is
slated for 7 p.m.
