Trojans Finish Ninth At Sam Hall Intercollegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Senior Nicklaus Benton fired a three-under par 68 in the final round of the par-71 Sam Hall Intercollegiate on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 17th place and lead the way for UALR. The Trojans closed with an even-par 284 at the 6,882-yard Hattiesburg Country Club to finish ninth at the 15-team event.

Benton's final-round 68 allowed him to finish in a tie for 17th place at one-over par 214 (74-72-68). He was joined in the top-25 by sophomore Alfred Kerstis, who led all players with 42 pars and tied for 24th place at three-over par 216 (72-71-73). Junior Nick Zimmerman was third on the team at six-over par 219 (76-71-72), followed by junior Luis Cedeno (74-75-71 - 220) and sophomore Johann Voss (72-75-75 - 222).

Louisiana Tech's Victor Lange held on for a one-stroke victory over South Alabama's Michael Garretson to capture medalist honors. Lange carded a 70 in the final round to finish at eight-under par 205 (68-67-70), and edge Garretson by a single stroke (70-67-69 - 206).

Ole Miss' Blake Morris placed third at six-under par 207 (70-67-70) to help the Rebels claim the team title. Mississippi State fired an eight-under par 276 in the final round, but Ole Miss shot a four-under par 280 over the final 18 holes to hold off the Bulldogs by one shot. Ole Miss finished at seven-under par 845 for the event (289-276-280), followed by Mississippi State at six-under par 846 (292-278-276). South Alabama placed third at two-under par 850 thanks to a six-under par 278 on the final day.

UALR posted its lowest score of the event in the final round (284) to finish ninth at 13-over par 865. The Trojans finished one-shot back of eighth-place Louisiana-Lafayette (864), but came in ahead of fellow Sun Belt Conference members ULM (875) and Arkansas State (878).

The Trojans return to action Sept. 24-25 at the Cardinal Invitational in Louisville, Ky.
