NEW ORLEANS - UALR sophomore Edina Begic placed her name among elite company Monday (Oct. 1) when she garnered her second Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honor of 2012. With this recognition, she joined Barbara Gomes (1997) and Ivana Vracar (2003) as the only Trojans to win the award twice in the same season.
Begic turned in a stellar weekend to help the UALR volleyball team even its record at 8-8 and 4-0 in SBC play. In the Trojans 3-0 win over ULM Friday (Sept. 29), she registered 15 kills and only two errors in 22 swings for a season-best .591 hitting percentage.
In a battle for the early SBC West lead Saturday night (Sept. 29) against North Texas, Begic helped UALR pull out a five-set win with 33 kills and only eight errors on 82 swings (.305 hitting percentage). In the deciding fifth alone, Begic turned in five kills on only 12 swings (.417) to help end the Mean Green's winning streak at seven matches. Her 37 points on Saturday was also a career high.
Begic's 33 kills against North Texas was not only a personal best, it is also the second-most spikes in a match in NCAA Division I play this year.
With six kills and 6.94 points per set this weekend, Begic extended her lead in the nation in both of those categories with 5.45 and 6.16, respectively. She is also third in the conference in aces (0.37) and ninth in hitting percentage (.391) for the season.
The Trojans continues their home stand this weekend when it battles South Alabama (10-8, 3-1 SBC) on Friday night (Oct. 6) at 7 p.m. UALR battles the Trojans of Troy (12-7, 3-1 SBC) Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
