UALR Drops Straight Setter at Louisiana-Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, La. - UALR (9-10, 5-2 Sun Belt) lost its second-straight conference match to Louisiana-Lafayette (12-11, 4-4) 25-18, 29-27, 25-20 Saturday night (Oct. 13) in Lafayette, La.

Sophomore Edina Begic led the Trojans with match highs in both digs (13) and kills (12). Classmate Marleen de Zoete added 32 assists and senior Daniele Souza Moura contributed 10 digs. As a team, UALR was able to out block the Rajin Cajuns' 6-4.

Louisiana-Lafayette was led Tonice White's  11 and Blair Claypool's 10 kills. Mandi Gavin added a match-high 35 assists. Caitlyn Auxilien contributed 13 digs while Lavinia Tataran and Andrea Hole had 12 digs each.

ULL outhit UALR .246-.185 for the match.

The first set went back and forth between two early runs by the home team gave Louisiana-Lafayette the lead for good. The Trojans claimed the first two points thanks to a Begic kill and solo block, but ULL tied it up on a de Zoete attack error and a White kill. After UALR recorded the next two, ULL answered with six unanswered to take the lead in the set for good thanks to three UALR errors, a kill each from white and Blair Claypoole and an ace from Auxilien. UALR answered back with a 4-1 run of its own on a pair of kills from Xie, a spike from Begic and a ULL attack error to pull within 9-8.

The back and forth early ended thanks to a pair of aces and kills by Louisiana-Lafayette to take a 13-8 lead. The Rajin' Cajuns never led by less than four the rest of the frame as UALR fell behind by a set.

Set two saw ULL repel four set points to go up 2-0. Down 20-18, UALR wrestled back the lead on two Rajin's Cajun errors and a kill off the bump by de Zoete. The home team punched back with a pair of points, but a kill each by Begic, de Zoete and Souza Moura gave UALR two set points.  ULL held firm thanks to a kill and a block, but UALR gave itself another opportunity thanks to an Adisa Hodzic kill. Both teams traded the next four points and UALR had its fourth set point at 27-26. Two kills around a Trojan attack error gave ULL a thrilling set triumph.

UALR fought back to tie Lousiana-Lafayette in the third twice, but the Rajin' Cajuns put together a 7-1 run that gave them the lead for good. UALR trailed 9-5 and de Zoete notched a pair of kills, coupled with spikes each from Begic and Hodzic tied the match. Dropping down by three later in the frame, UALR tied it up at 14 on a Xie kills, a ULL error and a senior Emily Pepperman ace.

Undeterred, the home team went on a 7-1 spurt to all but put away the match. Two kills and a block gave ULL a 17-14 lead. Souza Moura halted momentum with a solo block, but ULL answered with a pair of kills and took advantage of a pair of errors on the Trojans to go up 21-15. Both teams essentially sided out the rest of the way as ULL claimed the third 25-20.

UALR looks to get back to its winning ways Tuesday (Oct. 16) when it hosts Arkansas State. The battle with the RedWolves is set for 7 p.m.
