BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Trojans started the match with a quick four-point lead but could not keep the momentum as UALR (10-12, 6-4 Sun Belt) fell to Western Kentucky (24-3, 10-0) 25-14, 25-14, 25-18 Saturday afternoon (Oct. 20) in Bowling Green, Ky.
Sophomore Adisa Hodzic had a team-high eight kills with only one error on 20 swings (.350) and eight blocks. Senior Daniele Souza Moura added 10 digs and seven kills while sophomore Marleen de Zoete registered 20 assists and a team-high four blocks.
Melanie Stutzman led the Hilltoppers with 30 assists and 12 digs. Heather Boyan and Noelle Lagenkamp both had match-highs of nine kills while Mollie Pajakowski contributed four aces.
UALR was the first to score on its own serve and took a 7-3 lead on Western Kentucky in set one. With the first four points of the frame split between the two teams, the Trojans took its first lead at 3-2 on a Hilltoppers attack error. De Zoete extended the lead with an ace for the 4-2 lead. Western Kentucky sided out the next point, but kills by Hodzic and senior Eva Xie around a de Zoete-Hodzic block put the Trojans up 7-3.
UALR trailed 14-13 before a Western Kentucky 11-1 on Sarah Rogers and Pajakowski's serve. During the spurt, the Hilltoppers recorded four aces and took advantage of four UALR attack errors.
Set two again went back and forth early, but another series of service runs by the Hilltoppers win the second by an identical 25-14 score. With the home team up 8-5, the Trojans responded with a senior Daniele Souza Moura kill and a de Zoete-Souza Moura block. Both teams split the next six points before Western Kentucky scored the next five, four on Pajakowski's serve. Western Kentucky never led by less than five the rest of the way.
Set three saw a quick start by the Hilltoppers foiled by their own errors. With UALR down 10-7, two Western Kentucky miscues and a block by Souza Moura and de Zoete tied it up at 10. Tied at 12, Western Kentucky's Rachel Engle and Stutzman wrapped kills around a UALR error to give the Hilltoppers the lead for good. UALR called timeout but Pajakowski added a pair of aces to put the home team up 17-12. Western Kentucky claimed the set by seven and the match in straight-sets.
UALR takes more than a weak off before it returns to action next Sunday (Oct. 28) when it travels to Jonesboro, Ark. First serve against Arkansas State set for 2 p.m.
