BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - It has been a dream season for UALR volleyball sophomore Edina Begic. On Wednesday night (Nov. 14), the head coaches of the Sun Belt Conference agreed.
At the annual banquet before the upcoming tournament, Begic was named the 2012 Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year as well to the All-SBC First Team. She is the fourth player of the year during the 25-year tenure of head coach Van Compton, joining Barbara Gomes (1997), Tanja Radovic (2000) and Amy Haffner (Defensive, 2008).
"Edina has been so critical for us all season, playing full rotation and coming up big for us both offensively and defensively," Compton said. "We have relied on her and she has been such a huge part of winning the West Division.
"She has been great all year and her stats show it," Compton added.
Begic currently leads the nation in both kills (5.12) and points (5.78) per set and finished the season with 20 double-doubles (kills and digs). She is also the only player, according to the AVCA, to have reached 30 kills for a match on three separate occasions this season. Begic set a new career-high, and matched the school record, for spikes in a match with 34 in a critical come-from-behind victory over Louisiana-Lafayette (Nov. 4).
Finishing the regular season with 543 kills and 184 errors on 1,382 swings (.260 hitting percentage), Begic enters the SBC tournament just 21 kills shy of the UALR season record (Ivana Vracar in 2003). Begic also leads the SBC with 0.35 aces per set (37).
The 2012 SBC West Division Champion UALR Trojans return to action tomorrow in the first round of the SBC Tournament against Arkansas State. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m.
