- UALR finished with a +13 margin on the glass (45-to-32) and ended the night
with four players in double figures, as the Trojans (3-2) topped Jacksonville (2-3) 78-56
in their second game in Hoops for Hope Classic Wednesday night at the Jack
Stephens Center. Freshman John Gillon
led all players with 16 points and four assists, while freshman James White finished with 13 points,
eight rebounds and three blocks.
Junior Will
Neighbour scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting and pulled down seven
rebounds, and sophomore Taggart Lockhart
scored a career-high 14 points while adding two steals. Sophomore Michael Javes grabbed a season-best
seven boards and blocked two shots.
Freshman Josh
Hagins scored a career-best eight points on a perfect 3-fo-3 effort from
the field, including 2-of-2 from three-point range, to go along with three
assists.
The Trojans ended the night with 16 assists to tie a
season high, while their seven blocks were a season best.
UALR ended the night shooting 45.3 percent from the
floor and held the Dolphins to just 35.1 percent for the game. The Trojans'
doubled the Dolphins' output in the paint, 36-to-18, while leading in
second-chance points (20-to-11), points off turnovers (20-to-15) and fast-break
points (8-0). The Trojans' bench outscored JU's bench 24-to-21.
Leading by 15 at the half, the Trojans' second-half
lead got as low as six when Tyler Alderman knocked down a pair of free throws
to cut it to 48-42 with just over 14 minutes remaining. The Trojans answered by
scoring eight of the next 12 points, as a three by Gillon at the 9:37 returned
the Trojans' lead to double digits, 58-48.
Consecutive jumpers by White and Neighbour put UALR up
16, 69-53, with just under four minutes left in the game, and another trey by
Gillon put UALR up 21 less than two minutes later.
UALR's 78 points were its second-highest total of the season,
trailing only the 84 it put up against UT Martin in the season opener.
UALR took a 42-27 lead into intermission thanks to a
32-17 halftime edge on the boards and 17-combined points from White and
Lockhart. Lockhart led all scorers with at the half with nine points on 4-of-7
shooting from the field. White knocked down 3-of-5 for eight points to go along
with five rebounds and a blocked shot.
Lockhart sparked a UALR run with six-straight points to
put the Trojans up seven, 22-15, while his trey at the 8:58 mark put UALR up
11, 28-17.
Hagins drained a three at the 5:37 mark to put UALR up
13, 33-20, but Jacksonville answered with five-straight points to get the
deficit back to single digits. The Trojans closed the half on a 7-2 run that
was capped by a reverse lay-in from Gillon to give UALR its biggest lead of the
first 20 minutes, 42-27, heading into intermission.
UALR returns to action on Saturday when they continue
the Hoops for Hope Classic against SMU in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Tip-off is
set for 8:30 p.m.
