NORTH LITTLE ROCK,
Ark. - UALR improved to 2-1 on the young season, taking 5-of-6 singles
matches en route to a 5-2 win over Central Arkansas.
It was the first match of the season for the Sugar Bears.
The Trojans trailed 1-0 after doubles action. Senior Yana Kakovkina and junior Viktoriya Plyuta won 8-7 at first
doubles. In the second spot, senior Veronique Luksich and sophomore Michaela McShane lost 8-7. UCA secured the doubles point thanks to an 8-6 win at
third doubles over sophomore Dané Vorster and freshman Christel Amsallem.
Facing a deficit, UALR wasted no time in overtaking the
Sugar Bears. After splitting the first two sets (6-4, 2-6) at first singles,
Luksich won the last set 6-3 over UCA's Simona Horsikyan to tie the match.
Central Arkansas retook the lead thanks to Allison Murphy's 6-4, 6-4 win over
Plyuta at second singles.
The Trojans dominated the rest of the match. Kakovkina tied
the contest with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Krizia Buck in the third spot. At fourth
singles, Vorster rallied from losing the first set 6-3 before taking the final
two frames 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Kamilla Galieva beat Sasha Ruocco 7-6 (3), 6-1 at fifth singles. McShane put the exclamation
point on the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at sixth singles.
UALR tennis returns to action next Wednesday (Jan. 30) when
it travels to Fort Smith, Arkansas to take on Arkansas-Fort Smith. Match time
is set for 1 p.m.
