- UALR senior catcher Blake Johnson
has been named to the 2013 Johnny Bench Award watch list, it was announced by the
Greater Wichita Sports Commission on Monday. The initial watch list includes 48
NCAA Division I catchers and will be narrowed down to semifinalists on May 16.
Through 13 games played this season, Johnson leads the
Trojans with a .348 batting average and has totaled three home runs and nine RBI.
Johnson's 3-for-5 performance against Iowa on March 2 helped lead the Trojans
to a 5-3 win against the Hawkeyes, while his 2-for-4 performance with a homer
and three RBI helped UALR top Evansville 8-7 on Feb. 16.
Johnson was a First Team All-Sun Belt and First Team
ABCA All-South Central Region selection in 2012. The Sachse, Texas-native
started all 43 games he appeared in, ranked third on the team with a .315 batting
average and finished second on the Trojans with 14 doubles and a .533 slugging
percentage. Johnson enjoyed a 12-game hit streak from March 30-April 20 of last
year - the longest by a Trojan during the 2012 season.
finalists for the 2013 Johnny Bench Award will be announced June 4. A final
vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series.
All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at
the 15th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 27.
