BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -
UALR tennis (11-6, 1-2 Sun Belt) took 5-of-6 singles matches to rally and beat
Western Kentucky (6-4, 0-1 SBC) 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Bowling Green High
School.
After dropping the point in doubles play, the Trojans put on
an impressive display in singles action. Senior Veronique Luksich put a halt to Monta Reinfelde's eight-match
winning streak at first singles with a 7-5, 6-4 win. Classmate Yana Kakovkina put UALR in the lead at
second singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Madeline Phillips. Junior Viktoriya Plyuta fought off Gabby
Crofford at third singles to take a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win.
Freshman Kamilla
Galieva clinched the match for the Trojans with a dominating win at fourth
singles, 6-0, 6-1 over McKinley Mason. Classmate Christel Amsallem punctuated the match at sixth singles with a 6-1,
7-5 win against Alex Crofford.
The Lady Toppers lone win came at fifth singles as sophomore
Michaela McShane fell to Carolina
Barboza 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Western Kentucky took an early 1-0 lead in the match with a
pair of close victories in doubles action. Plyuta and Kakovkina lost 8-5 at
first doubles while McShane and Luksich lost in the second slot 8-4. Galieva
and sophomore Dané Vorster gave UALR
momentum heading into singles play with an 8-5 win at third doubles.
UALR returns to action tomorrow when it travels to
Murfreesboro, Tenn. to take on Middle Tennessee. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
