Tennis Comes Up Short at Middle Tennessee, 5-2

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - UALR (11-7, 1-3 Sun Belt) split the weekend of SBC competition as it fell to Middle Tennessee (7-7, 1-1 SBC) Sunday afternoon (March 17) in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

With the Blue Raiders up 2-0, freshmen Christel Amsallem (6-5, 2-1 SBC) cut the deficit in half when she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth singles against Alexandra Torres. Junior Viktoriya Plyuta (9-8, 2-2 SBC) and MTSU's Flavia Nagayama each took a set 6-4 at third singles, but Plyuta came out on top in the deciding frame 6-2. Freshman Kamilla Galieva (12-6, 2-2 SBC) won the first set 6-3 at fourth singles, but Middle Tennessee's Nayara Moraes took each of the next two sets with a 6-3 score in the final match of the day.

In other singles matches, senior Veronique Luksich (10-6, 2-2 SBC) fell to Irina Constantinide at the first slot 6-1, 6-3. Classmate Yana Kakovkina (8-6, 1-2 SBC) fell by identical 6-2 scores at second singles to Yuiri Nomoto. Sophomore Dané Vorster (7-9, 0-3 SBC) lost at fifth singles 6-2, 7-6 (2).

In doubles action, Middle Tennessee captured all three matches. Plyuta and Kakovkina (8-9, 0-3 SBC) at first doubles and sophomore Michaela McShane and Luksich (6-7, 0-4 SBC) lost at second doubles 8-2. Galieva and Vorster (7-5, 2-1 SBC) fell at third doubles 8-3.

After taking Monday off, UALR returns to action Tuesday (March 19) when it travels to Nacogdoches, Texas to take on Stephen F. Austin. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
