Release: 04/19/2013

TROY, Ala. – UALR (18-19, 5-11 Sun Belt) scored a run in the top of the sixth, but it was not enough as Troy (27-11, 9-7 SBC) held on for the 2-1 win over UALR Friday night (April 19) at Riddle-Pace Field in Troy, Ala.

Senior Chance Cleveland (4-6) threw a three-hit complete game, allowing only three hits and two runs while striking out six. Taylor Hicks (5-2) also went the distance for Troy, allowing only one run on four hits and three walks while striking out nine.

Junior Ben Crumpton led the Trojans from the plate, hitting a triple in three at-bats with a walk and run scored. Junior Austin Pfeiffer added an RBI groundout.

UALR scored its only run in the sixth. Crumpton drove the first pitch of the inning to center field for a triple and scored on Pfeiffer’s groundout. With one out, senior Blake Johnson singled and stole second. He advanced to third on a two-out, infield single by senior Chris Burk. However, a strikeout ended the UALR threat.

Cleveland was able to pitch out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth to keep UALR within a run. With one out, a hit batter and a two-base throwing error put a pair of Troy players in scoring position. However, Cleveland forced a 3-1 groundout and a full-count flyout to end the threat.

Troy struck first for the game in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs. After a leadoff walk and groundout moved Brandon Brown to second, Logan Pierce singled Brown in to plate the first run of the game. Danny Collins followed with a double and an RBI groundout by Trae Santos put the home team up 2-0.

Both teams stranded six runners for the ballgame.

UALR returns to action Saturday afternoon (April 20) at 1 p.m. for game two of the series against Troy.
