MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The UALR men’s golf team sits in second place after combining for a team score of 293 (+5) in the opening round of the Sun Belt Championship at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail’s The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Ala. Senior Nicklaus Benton paced the Trojans and is currently in a tie for third with a two-under par 70 on Monday.
South Alabama set the pace with a combined score of 284 (-4) as three of the Jags’ individuals finished the round under par. USA’s Lane Hulse leads all players after shooting a four-under par 68 in his opening round. Middle Tennessee’s Lucas Armstrong is just a shot off the pace, while USA’s Tyler Klava is tied with Benton for the third-best round of the day at two-under par 70. South Alabama’s Michael Garretson sits fifth after shooting a one-under par 71 on Monday.
North Texas, Georgia State and Middle Tennessee all posted team scores of 295 (+7) and sit two strokes back of the Trojans.
Sophomore Colby Benton posted the second-best UALR score of the day, shooting a one-over par 73 to place him in a tie for tenth. Classmates Johann Voss and Alfred Kerstis are tied for 19th after posting three-over scores of 73 on Monday. Junior Nick Zimmerman is tied for 28th after shooting four-over 76 in his opening round.
Play will resume on Tuesday with tee times beginning at 8 a.m.
