LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – UALR sophomore Sam Vogel hit a game-winning double in the 10th inning as UALR (22-22) knocked off Stephen F. Austin (23-21) 6-5 Tuesday night at Gary Hogan Field.
Senior John Clark led the Trojans with three hits, including a home run and a double to go along with a run scored and an RBI. Classmate Chris Burk went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, three RBI and two runs scored.
Senior Tyler Buckley (1-1) evened his record by retiring all six Lumberjack batters he faced.
Stephen F. Austin was led by Zach Benson, who was a triple short of the cycle in five at-bats. He added a pair of RBI and a run scored.
Garret Powell (2-2) gave up the winning run for Stephen F. Austin, allowing one run on one hit and one walk.
Stephen F. Austin struck first with a leadoff home run from Benson, but UALR rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the first. Junior Ben Crumpton was hit by a pitch and stole second to move into scoring position. Classmate Austin Pfeiffer singled to left to put men on the corners with no outs. Senior Blake Johnson hit into a double play to score Crumpton to tie the score.
The visitors retook the lead in the top of the second thanks to a two-out hit-by-pitch and double. UALR responded in the bottom of the third. A single and an error put two runners on to begin the frame. Stephen F. Austin induced a shallow pop-up for the first out, but Burk hit the ball out of the yard to left center, his fourth home run of the year. UALR led 4-2 after three.
UALR starter and junior right-hander Ethan Schlechte preserved the lead in the top of the fourth. After the first two men reached with no outs, Schlecthe induced a pair of infield line outs to keep runners at second and third. A walk loaded the bases, but a grounder to third ended the Lumberjack threat.
Dozier cut the UALR lead in half in the top of the fifth with a solo home run. Clark responded for UALR in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot of his own, his sixth home run of the season, to give the Trojans a 5-3 lead after five innings.
A two-out rally in the top of the seventh tied the score. With two gone, the Lumberjacks put two men in scoring position with a single and double. Hood singled the 2-2 pitch to right field to knot the game at five.
Both teams went in order in the ninth as the game went to extra innings. After Buckley retired Stephen F. Austin in order, Vogel ended the game. After Burk singled to begin the inning, he was sacrificed to second by senior Myles Parma. Vogel hit a shot down the left field line that just stayed fair for a game-winning RBI double.
UALR returns to action the weekend when it travels to Boca Raton, Fla. to take on Florida Atlantic. First pitch on Friday (May 3) is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
