Pfeiffer’s Walk-Off Homer Lifts UALR Over UCA, 5-3
UALR Sports Information
Release: 05/07/2013

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A walk-off, two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th inning by junior Austin Pfeiffer lifted UALR (25-23) to a 5-3 win over Central Arkansas (32-14) on Tuesday in front of a crowd of 1,391 at Dickey-Stephens Park. The victory marked the second-straight extra-inning win for the Trojans against the Bears, and was their fifth-straight in the series overall.

Trailing by one as they headed into their final set of at-bats, the Trojans scored a run on a RBI single by senior David Guarno to tie the game at 3-all and force extra innings. A two-out single by junior Bryson Thionnet kept the Trojans’ hopes alive. Thionnet then advanced to second on a wild pitch to put the game-tying run in scoring position. Down to his final strike, Guarno slapped a 2-2 pitch through the right side of the infield, scoring Thionnet from second and knotting the score at 3-all.

Neither team was able to muster a hit through the first two and a half innings of extras. But sophomore Ryan Hope drew a walk in the bottom of the 12th, setting the stage for Pfeiffer’s two-run blast. The homer was the Benton, Ark.-native’s eighth of the season.

Pfeiffer, along with sophomore Sam Vogel and Thionnet, was one of three UALR players to finish the night with two hits. Pfeiffer’s homer was the only extra-base hit of the game for either team.

UCA finished the night with 11 hits, led by Forrestt Allday’s 4-for-6 effort at the plate, but left 13 runners on base in the contest.

Junior Dillon Moritz (3-2) threw the final 3.0 innings while giving up no runs on no hits to earn the win. UCA’s Blake Clayton (2-1) surrendered just two hits in 2.1 innings of work, but picked up the loss after giving up Pfeiffer’s two-run shot.

The first five runs of the game were all unearned, as UCA scored two runs on three hits and two errors over the second and third innings. The Bears added another unearned run in the top of the seventh before UALR responded with two runs on two hits and an error in the bottom half of the frame.

UALR returns to action this weekend with a three-game series against FIU at Gary Hogan Field. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
