CALGARY, Alberta – UALR was held to 33.3 percent shooting from the floor and 12.5 percent shooting from three-point range in an 80-67 loss to Alberta on Friday at Jack Simpson Gymnasium in the Battle of the Border. Sophomore Josh Hagins totaled game highs for the Trojans in points (14), rebounds (7) and assists (5) in 24 minutes of action.
Sophomore James White and junior Ben Dillard added 11 points each in the loss. UALR shot 41.9 percent from the floor (13-of-31) over the first two quarters, but shot just 26.8 percent (11-of-41) over the final 20 minutes.
Joel Friessen scored 22 points to lead Alberta, while Jordan Baker added 19 on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor. Led by Baker’s 10 boards, the Bears outrebounded UALR 46-to-38.
UALR led 23-to-12 in points off turnovers and its bench outscored the Bears’ 33-to-16, but it wasn’t enough to make up for the Trojans’ cold shooting night from the floor.
Alberta led 23-17 after the first quarter, but UALR came back to take a brief one-point lead when a pair of free throw by Hagins made it 26-25 at the 6:15 mark of the second quarter. Alberta answered with a 7-0 run to go back up 32-26 with 4:24 left in the half and went into halftime leading 37-32.
The Bears’ lead grew as large as 15 on two occasions in the third quarter and stood at 11, 55-44, as they prepared to begin the fourth. UALR cut its deficit to five on a jumper by senior Will Neighbour with 7:37 to play, and again on a bucket by White with just under six minutes remaining. A couple of free throws by junior J.T. Thomas at the 4:09 mark again pulled UALR within five, but Alberta was able to rattle off eight-straight points to go up 71-58 and put the game out of reach.
UALR plays its third and final exhibition game in the Battle of the Border against Calgary on Saturday at 8 p.m.
