Release: 08/17/2013

CALGARY, Alberta – UALR closed out the 2013 Battle of the Border with an 81-65 win over Calgary on Saturday at Jack Simpson Gymnasium. Senior Will Neighbour scored 19 points to lead the Trojans while freshman Maurius Hill scored 15 points in 14 minutes of action.

Hill’s 15 points came on a perfect 5-of-5 effort from the floor and 5-of-6 effort from the foul line. Junior Gus Leeper scored eight points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while sophomore Kemy Osse scored 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

UALR shot 46.3 percent (31-of-67) from the floor as a team and 81.0 percent (17-of-21) from the foul line. The Trojans played to a +6 advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Dinos 39-to-33. UALR scored 40 points in the paint and committed just 10 turnovers on the night.

The Trojans’ defense limited Calgary to 37.1 percent (23-of-62) shooting from the floor and forced the Dinos into 19 turnovers. Jhony Verrone led Calgary with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-6 from three-point range.

UALR held an 18-14 lead after the first quarter, with junior DeVonte Smith knocking down a three-pointer with three seconds left in the period to push the Trojans’ lead to four. The Trojans held on to their four-point lead heading into half, taking a 35-31 advantage into intermission as both teams scored 17 points in the second quarter.

A jumper by Leeper gave UALR its largest lead of the game at 60-37 with 2:29 left in the third quarter. Calgary ended the half on a 6-0 run to make it 60-43 at the start of the fourth.

Calgary pulled as close as 12 on a three-pointer by Verrone with just over eight minutes remaining in the game. But UALR answered with four-straight free throws by Neighbour and Leeper on its next two possessions to go back up by 18, and the Dinos got no closer than 13 the rest of the way.

The Trojans will return to Little Rock on Sunday in preparation for the start of the fall semester on Monday, Aug. 19.
