NEW ORLEANS – Junior Edina Begic was named Offensive Player of the Week while classmate Marleen de Zoete was named Setter of the Week, the Sun Belt Conference announced Monday afternoon (Sept. 9). UALR went 1-2 this weekend at the Rice Invitational, including a five-set win over the host Owls on Saturday (Sept. 7).
Begic led the Trojans this weekend with 71 kills in 13 sets (5.46 per set) to bump her season average to more than five kills per set. She also added nine blocks and four aces at the Rice Invitational. Her best match came against the Owls, leading UALR from a two-set deficit to claim a 3-2 victory. Begic had a season-best 28 kills and only seven errors on 72 swings (.292 hitting percentage). She continues to lead the conference with 5.04 kills per set, a distinction she has held since the first week of the 2012 season.
For the weekend, de Zoete had 11.31 assists per set (147 total assists) and jumped from fifth to third in the UALR annals in assists. For the season, she leads the SBC with 11.56 assists per set, the only conference player averaging double-digit assists. Besides assists, de Zoete recorded 10 kills and only two errors on 25 attempts (.320 hitting percentage).
For her career, it was Begic's fourth Conference Offensive Player of the Week award. It was the first SBC Setter of the Week honor for de Zoete.
UALR returns to action this weekend (Sept. 13-14) when it travels to Las Cruces, N.M., for the New Mexico State Tournament. Besides the host Aggies, the Trojans face Northern Illinois and Southern Utah for the first time ever.
