LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Junior Edina Begic made UALR and Sun Belt Conference history when she was named Offensive Player of the Week for the third consecutive time in a vote by the SBC’s head coaches Monday.
Begic becomes only the second player in SBC history (FIU’s Yarimar Rosa in 2009) to be named Player of the Week for three consecutive weeks. This is also the seventh such honor for Begic’s career and passes former Trojans libero Amy Hafner (2007-08) for the most conference Player of the Week awards.
Begic was named MVP of the Tiger Invitational this weekend with 50 kills in 10 sets played (5.00 kills per set). After a slow first set against Austin Peay with one kill and three errors on 11 attempts, she rebounded in the final three sets with 16 kills on 27 attempts with no errors. Begic hit .368 for the match. Against the host Tigers, Begic had 16 kills and 14 digs for her seventh double-double of the season in a UALR sweep.
Her best match of the weekend came in the finale against La Salle. Begic had 17 kills and only three errors on 34 attempts for a season-best .412 hitting percentage.
Begic continues to lead the SBC and is in the top-10 in the country with 5.28 kills per set. She also is sixth in the conference with a .311 hitting percentage.
UALR (8-4), off to its best start since the 2008 season, returns to action Friday when it travels to Mobile, Ala., to take on South Alabama (5-5) in both teams first SBC match.
