JONESBORO, Ark. – The UALR soccer team held a one-goal lead for nearly the entirety of Sunday’s conference opener at Arkansas State, but the Red Wolves scored twice in the final five minutes to claim a 2-1 victory.
The Trojans got out to a lightning-fast start as senior Paige Mason put UALR ahead 1-0 before four full minutes had elapsed. On the first shot of the game for either team, Mason took a through ball from freshman Mikayla Uyokpeyi in open space, beat a defender and had an empty net in front of her. The senior scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season to hand the Trojans an early cushion.
UALR (3-7, 0-1 Sun Belt Conference) held that lead for more than 80 minutes, playing staunch defense and getting four saves from freshman keeper Sara Cavanagh.
But in the 85th minute, the Red Wolves (6-3-2, 1-0) finally equalized off the foot of Loren Mitchell. Her shot just snuck past Cavanagh. Fewer than three full minutes later, Samhia Simao got the game-winner for Arkansas State.
The team stats were very even when the final whistle sounded. UALR and Arkansas State each had six shots on goal while the Trojans took seven corners to the Red Wolves’ five.
The Trojans return home next weekend for two more Sun Belt Conference games. UALR hosts South Alabama on Friday at 7 p.m. before also facing Troy on Sunday at 1 p.m.
