JONESBORO, Ark. – The UALR track and field teams kick off their indoor season Sunday with four event victories that included a 1-2-3 finish in the men’s 3K and a senior claiming a title and setting a personal best in the shot put.
The UALR men took the top three places in the men’s 3K race, running strong and showing off their cross country skills indoors. Joseph Aguilar won the race in 8:43.29 while George Gathuru was less than half a second behind in 8:43.75. Senior Shaun Koehn rounded out the top three in 8:51.85. Rebekah Gibbons was the lone UALR runner in the women’s 3K, taking 5th in 10:55.16.
Rebekah Grissom won the shot put with a distance of 45’ 2 1/2” on her final throw of the evening. The senior threw 44’ 6” on her fifth attempt of the day, tying with Jackson State’s Queen Briggs for the lead. But on her last try, Grissom bested Briggs by eight and a half inches for the event victory. She also set a new personal record with that mark, beating her previous record by more than two feet and moving up to second in the UALR record books.
The Trojans had a great showing in the men’s mile run as senior Markus Pearson claimed first place in a time of 4:25.31. Dalton Richey took third in 4:29.26 and Caleb DeLaPaz was seventh in 4:36.95.
And the team’s last victory of the night came in the men's 4K distance medley relay. The Trojans team won that race in a time of 10:49.38. The UALR women ran in the 4x400, taking third in 4:09.96 thanks to the efforts of Jasmine Blunt, Ashtin Boykin, Shanavia Cole and Rickitha Hicks.
Freshman Desmond Gulley looked strong in his first ever competing at UALR, taking fourth in the long jump with a distance of 21’ 4 1/4”, a distance he reached on his third jump of the day. That mark is good for eighth in UALR history in the long jump.
Also having a great day was Alex Ebmeyer, who took third in the 600-meter race in 1:22.14.
A quartet of Trojans competed in the men’s 55-meter dash preliminaries with freshman Terance Goodwin doing the best in ninth place in 6.59 seconds. Dylan Wood (13th, 6.67 seconds), Alford Tribble (15th, 6.70) and Corey Martin (16th, 6.73) also took part in the race for UALR.
On the women’s side of that race, sophomore Rickitha Hicks placed third in the finals, running 7.21 seconds that is good for fifth all-time at UALR and a personal best. Natalia Johnson also ran in the prelims, missing the final cut by one place when she placed ninth in 7.52 seconds.
UALR had five men take part in the 200. Alford Tribble and Kendrick Dunn took seventh and eighth place, respectively, finishing 12 hundredths of a second apart in 22.64 and 22.76 seconds. Dylan Woof was tied for ninth in 22.87 seconds while Goodwin placed 15th and Cory Martin took 16th. Two UALR women ran in the 200 as Natallia Johnson placed 14th in 26.86 seconds while Baylee Daves was 23rd.
Also competing for UALR on the day was Howard Aldridge, who placed 16th in the 400-meter race in 52.70. Ashtin Boykin took sixth in the women’s 400, crossing the finish line in 1:00.84. And in the 800, two UALR women competed as Brittney Brasuell placed 10th in 2:31.47 and Abigail Green was 13th in 2:41.62.
UALR is now off until the new year when it returns to Jonesboro for the Arkansas State Invite. That meet is set for Jan. 24,
