Release: 04/11/2014

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Trojans failed to score and dropped game one to the No.1 Ragin’ Cajuns by a score of 7-0 at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.

UALR (13-18, 3-10 SBC) scattered eight hits and three walks but were unable to dent the plate. Louisiana (32-4, 12-1 SBC), on the other hand, scored once in each of the first five innings and twice in the seventh on nine total hits.

Ben Crumpton stayed hot with two more hits and also stole two more bases to build his lead in the conference and extend his career stolen base record at UALR.

The Ragin’ Cajuns manufactured a run in the first as Seth Harrison came around to score after reaching on a bunt single. Evan Powell added to the lead with a solo homer in the second and Louisiana tacked on another run in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth, Louisiana plated a fourth run and threatened to break the game open. But UALR starter Travis McDonald was able to strike out Harrison to strand runners on second and third.

McDonald found himself in trouble again in the fifth and was relieved by Dillon Moritz with the bases loaded and one out. Moritz got the first batter he faced to ground out and drive in Louisiana’s fifth run. The senior got the next batter to pop up to end the inning and the Ragin' Cajuns' threat.

McDonald finished his evening with 4.1 innings allowing five runs on eight hits and struck out three.

The Trojans doubled their hit total with back-to-back hits from Bryson Thionnet and Ryan Scott to put two runners on for the first time since Crumpton and Austin Pfeiffer walked in the first inning. However, Carson Baranik was able to register a strikeout of pinch hitter Sam Vogel to get out of the inning and maintain Louisiana’s 5-0 lead.

UALR was able to get two runners in scoring position in the seventh, but once again came up empty.

Moritz worked 2.0 innings allowing one hit, but three straight one-out walks forced the Trojans to make a change and bring Jake Busiek out of the bullpen. The first batter laid down a suicide squeeze back to Busiek. Busiek didn’t have a play at the plate and went to first to get the out as the runner on second raced around to score and give the Ragin’ Cajuns a 7-0 lead.

Stephen Chandler pitched a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts.

With his two hits, Crumpton has had multiple hits in seven of his last 11 games. The senior reached base three times and stole two bases to move to 22 on the season. Drew Merten extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his single in the seventh. The catcher also doubled in the ninth and was stranded on third.

Scott added two singles and Petr Sila and Thionnet added the other two hits for the Trojans.

UALR and Louisiana will play again on Saturday with the first pitch coming at 6:00 p.m. before finishing up the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
