LAFAYETTE, La. – UALR fell behind early and couldn’t recover in a 5-2 loss against No. 1 Louisiana at Tigue Moore Field.
Dyllon Brownmiller pitched three solid innings out of the bullpen and Justin Steelmon paced the offense in the losing effort. The Trojans (13-19, 3-11 SBC) didn’t commit and error and capitalized on both of the Ragin’ Cajuns’ (33-4, 13-1 SBC) miscues, but it was not enough.
Sam Thoele got his third start of the season and faced just three batters to finish the first inning. Thoele got himself into trouble in the second with a leadoff walk that later came around to score on a sacrifice fly.
Ben Crumpton got a two-out hit in the top of the third and stole second before Louisiana was able to get out of the inning. Crumpton’s stolen base was his 23rd this season and tied his total from last season.
Nick Thurman started the third with a triple and scored on a single by Jace Conrad.
Bryson Thionnet led off the fifth with a double to left field to get the Trojans started. Petr Sila, then, beat out a bunt single. The throw from the pitcher hit Sila in the back and got away from the first baseman allowing Thionnet to score and make it 2-1.
As they have done all weekend the Cajuns made the Trojans’ pitching staff pay for walks. Thoele hit the first batter of the fifth inning and walked the second before a sacrifice bunt moved them both into scoring position. Tyler Girouard produced a two-run single and later scored on a hit by Seth Harrison as Louisiana took a 5-1 lead.
Thoele worked five innings allowing seven hits and five runs, all earned, while striking out four Cajuns. Chase Rousseau came on in relief and allowed the only batter he faced to reach on a single. UALR turned to Brownmiller to finish the inning allowing a double, but didn’t allow Louisiana to score.
The Trojans chipped away in the seventh when Thionnet scored when Joseph Paulino reached on an error by the shortstop.
Brownmiller worked the final three innings for UALR allowing just two hits while striking out two.
Steelmon led the Trojans going 2-for-4. Crumpton, Sila and Thionnet had the other three hits for UALR. Drew Merten and Thionnet scored the Trojans' runs.
The Trojans will be looking to avoid the sweep on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. before heading back to Gary Hogan Field to host Louisiana Tech on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
