LITTLE ROCK – The UALR women’s soccer team wrapped up an impressive and productive spring season last weekend, capping an undefeated spring with a victory in the Melinda Marie Evans 7v7 Kick for the Cure Championship at Burns Park in North Little Rock this weekend.
All told, the Trojan players posted 12 victories in various spring tournament games, defeating teams from in-state rivals, Sun Belt opposition and other nearby universities.
“It's been the spring season we really wanted to have,” Coach Adrian Blewitt said. “Coming in to the spring I wanted our girls to sample success and feel what it's like to win and for their confidence to grow as we prepare for the fall season. We have achieved this, and individually they have improved and developed their game technically, physically in the weight room with Coach John Lamb and mentally since they now know and believe they can win.”
The spring season began in February with a futsal – indoor soccer –tournament that featured seven-on-seven contests against Louisiana College, Mississippi College and the Mississippi Brilla, a professional women’s team in the Premier Development League. The Trojans won all four of those games including two victories against the Brilla.
The team also had emphatic seven-on-seven victories against UAPB and Lyon College in the middle of the spring while taking some time to play a fun indoor tournament with UALR Soccer alumni.
Most recently, the Trojans capped off their spring by winning the Kick for the Cure Championship for the first time in team history. A win against Arkansas State highlighted the tournament, and UALR also claimed wins against Conference USA’s Louisiana Tech, Division-2 powerhouse Dallas Baptist, Christian Brothers and Hendrix College.
The Trojans' 2014 season is now just four months away. An updated 2014 roster and the 2014 schedule will be posted in the coming weeks.
