LOXLEY, Ala. – Junior Sofia Berglund is tied for the lead at 2-under par through the opening round of the Sun Belt Women’s Golf Championship at Steelwood Country Club. The Trojans are currently tied for third and just four shots back of second place after combining for a team score of 304 on Monday.
After bogeying her fifth hole of the day, Berglund bounced back with two birdies over the final four holes on the front nine to place her at 1-under at the turn. She added another birdie on the back nine while avoiding any additional bogeys to finish her opening round at 2-under 70.
Troy’s Fatima Fern Cano is tied with Berglund atop the leaderboard through the first 18 holes of play. Berglund and Cano were the only two players to finish Monday’s round under par. Four players from four different schools will enter Tuesday’s second round tied for third with matching scores of 1-over 73.
Troy leads the field of eight with a team score of 5-over 293 through 18 holes. Texas State (300) is seven shots back in second place. South Alabama (304) is tied with UALR in third place while Georgia State (312) sits fifth.
Playing in her first Sun Belt Championship, sophomore Stina Resen is one of three golfers tied for 12th place with a score of 4-over 76 in the opening round. Freshman Melodie Jean Dit Berthelot and junior Sofie Kvarnstrom are tied for 21st after turning in matching scores of 7-over 79. Junior Katie Reid is tied for 34th with a 10-over 82 in her opening round.
Play will resume on Tuesday with tee times beginning at 7:45 a.m.
