UALR Sports Information
Release: 05/20/2014

LITTLE ROCK – Senior third baseman Ben Crumpton and junior utility player Tanner Rockwell have been named to the All-Sun Belt Conference teams, the league announced on Tuesday. Crumpton earned first team honors while Rockwell was named to the second team.

Crumpton led the conference in steals for the second season in a row and finished the regular season fifth in the nation with 33 stolen bases. The senior was the catalyst for the Trojans’ offense and led the team with a .324 batting average and runs scored with 40 despite missing a week due to injury. Crumpton ended the year tied with Rockwell for the team’s lead in hits with 67 apiece.

The native of Hot Springs, Ark. had six multi-steal games this season including a four-hit, three-steal performance against South Alabama on March 22. He had a season-best 10-game hitting streak from April 1-April 18 during which he hit .400 with two home runs and stole nine bases. Crumpton finished his three-year career with a UALR record 80 stolen bases while also placing in the top-five in hits, runs, triples, at-bats and games played.

Rockwell epitomized the word utility for UALR this season. The Heber Springs, Ark. native started at least five games at third base, second base, left field, right field each and served as the designated hitter in twenty games while also pitching as the team’s closer. At the plate, Rockwell led the team with 16 doubles and 43 RBI while also owning the team’s top marks in on-base percentage (.400) and slugging percentage (.526). Meanwhile, he was second in home runs (seven) and batting average (.321) and walks (26). Rockwell and Crumpton each had 19 multi-hit games to lead the squad. Rockwell had eight of those multi-hit games during his 14-game hitting streak from March 8-March 29.

On the mound Rockwell was nearly unhittable. The right-hander allowed opponents to hit just .113 off of him and struck out 28 batters in 22.2 innings while posting a 1.59 ERA. He collected one win and eight saves on the season and pitched in two of the Trojans’ shutouts this season. Rockwell allowed just one run in his last nine appearances, which spanned 12.0 innings including two saves in the final weekend against Arkansas State as UALR fought to make the conference tournament.
