LITTLE ROCK – UALR volleyball coach Van Compton announced the team's challenging 2014 schedule on Tuesday afternoon. The schedule features 10 matches in three non-conference tournaments away from home to open the season. The Trojans’ Sun Belt Conference schedule, upped to 20 games this season, contains the remainder of the team’s games.
UALR will begin Compton’s 27th season at the helm with a trip to Stockton, Calif. to play Pacific, USC and Rider at the Pacific Community Classic. The Trojans will face Pacific at 7 p.m. on Aug. 29 and USC and Rider on Aug. 30.
The following weekend UALR will be in Fort Worth, Texas to face the University of Miami and Prairie View on Sept. 5 before playing Grambling and the host TCU on Sept. 6 in the TCU Nike Invitational.
The non-conference slate will wrap up with a trip to Norman, Okla. for the Nike Invitational hosted by Oklahoma. The Trojans will open play on Sept. 11 against the host Sooners at 7 p.m. and finish the weekend with a 10 a.m. match against Cal State Northridge and a 5 p.m. match with Lamar on Sept. 12.
Conference play, as well as the home schedule, will begin the following week as UALR hosts two conference foes from Louisiana. On Wednesday, Sept. 17 the Trojans will play host to ULM at 7 p.m., which will be followed by another home match with UL Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
The Sun Belt Conference schedule features 20 games this season with the addition of Georgia Southern and Appalachian State. UALR will visit Boone, N.C. on Sunday, Sept. 28 to face the Mountaineers and will welcome them to the Jack Stephens Center for the first time on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. UALR will also visit Georgia Southern (Oct. 5) before hosting the Eagles on Friday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m..
UALR’s rivalry with Arkansas State will be renewed on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. in Little Rock before the regular-season finale, which takes place in Jonesboro, Ark. on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.
Senior Day for the Trojans will be on Sunday, Nov. 16 in the squad’s final home game of the season against South Alabama in a match the starts at noon.
The Sun Belt Conference tournament will be hosted by Texas State in San Marcos, Texas on Nov. 27-29.
Edina Begic returns for her senior season after winning back-to-back Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year awards. As a junior the Bosnia-Herzegovina-native was third in the country in kills per set with 5.11 and in points per set with 5.83. Rising junior Sonja Milanovic joined Begic on the All-Sun Belt First Team in 2013 averaging 3.98 kills per set. The dynamic led the Trojans to a third-place finish in last year’s standings and will look to improve in the 2014 season.
