LITTLE ROCK – UALR was very well represented on the race course this weekend as two Trojan runners had top finishes at the Firecracker Fast 5K in town on Independence Day.
Former UALR runner and current Director of Athletic Development Leah Thorvilson won the women’s race in a time of 17:16.37, more than half a minute faster than the second-place runner. And current Trojan Shaun Koehn took second place in the men’s race, crossing the finish line in 14:56.02. Koehn was less than half a second from winning the race.
Thorvilson’s time was nearly a full minute better than her personal record in the 5K outdoors during her time in a UALR uniform.
The Firecracker Fast 5K – now in its 38th year – begins in The Heights district and runs along Kavanaugh Boulevard east and south to Van Buren Street. The course follows Van Buren south as it becomes Fair Park Boulevard and concludes near War Memorial Stadium.
Thorvilson, a noted distance runner, has already qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. Koenh will return to competition at UALR for his senior season on the track in 2015.
