LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – UALR pitcher Steve Gilgenbach became the second Trojan selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Friday, when the Kansas City Royals selected him in the 47th round.
A 6-3 left hander, Gilgenbach made 20 relief appearances as a senior in 2008 and led the Trojans with three saves. He held opposing hitters to a paltry .219 batting average and ended the year with a 4.34 ERA, while averaging 12.1 strikeouts per nine innings – having racked up 39 strikeouts in 29.0 innings of work.
Gilgenbach joined the Trojans from Madison Area Technical College, where he earned All-Region honors in his only season with the Wolfpack by going 7-3 with a 3.30 ERA. In his first season at UALR, Gilgenbach posted a 4.63 ERA with two saves over 18 relief appearances. The Fond du Lac, Wis.-native averaged 11.6 strikeouts per nine innings as a junior, fanning 30 batters over 23.1 innings pitched, and held opposing hitters to a .283 batting average.
Gilgenbach is the fourth UALR player selected in the MLB Draft over the past three seasons, joining teammate Robert Taylor (25th Round by the Florida Marlins in 2008) and former Trojan draft picks Rob Harmon (33rd round by the Seattle Mariners in 2006) and Brett Lawler (42nd round by the Florida Marlins in 2007).
