HOUSTON,
Texas—The UALR women’s basketball team used a 15-0 run in the
second halfincluding eight of those
points from Chastity Reed to regain
a lead and sustain it winning 73-54 Tuesday.The Trojans improve to 3-1 on the season.
Reed went 13-of-26 from
the floor scoring a season-high 29 points and contributing five boards, three
assists, and two steals.Asriel Rolfe knocked down a season-high
13 points and recorded a team and season high six assists, while Shanika Butler recorded a season-high
of 11 points.
After
UALR won the tip, Rolfe opened the half with a three-pointer.Rice (0-4) answered back with a three by Tara
Watts with 19:17 on the clock.
Over
the next two minutes, UALR outscored the Owls 6-4 including four by Reed.A three-pointer by Jessica Goswitz sparked an
11-2 run by Rice including three three-pointers to gain the team’s first lead
and extend it to 15-11 with 13:38 until the half.
Rice
scored four points over the next two minutes while holding UALR to free throws.The Trojans scored the team’s next field goal
in four minutes at the 7:12 mark on a jumper by Reed to cut the Owl lead to
19-17.
Both
teams exchanged points, before Rice scored six consecutive points to stretch
the lead to 26-19 with 4:09 on the clock.
In
the remaining 3:37, the Trojans scored six points including four by Reed while
holding the Owls to two points on free throws by D’Frantz Smart to bring the
half-time score to 28-25 with Rice holding the lead.
Rice
opened up on 7-0 run to gain the team’s greatest lead of ten with 18:30
remaining.A jumper by Marian Kursh at the 18:12 mark sparked
a 15-0 run including a minute and 40 second eight point consecutive scoring run
by Reed to gain the 40-35 advantage.
Rice
didn’t score the team’s next field goal until the 13:36 mark with a layup by
Megan Elliot, before a three-pointer by Rolfe and two jumpers by Reed gave the
Trojans the team’s largest lead of ten at 47-37 with 11:52 on the clock.
In
the next two minutes and forty-three seconds, UALR continued the team’s scoring
streak knocking down eight points to Rice’s two for the 55-39 lead with 8:02
remaining.
Over
the next three minutes, both teams scored five points with three coming from
Butler for the Trojans to bring the score to 60-44 for UALR.
In
the remaining 3:56, the Trojans sustained the team’s lead using nine trips to
the free throw line and a jumper by Kursh and a layup by Shelby Ashcraft while holding the Owls to free throws and two field
goals to win 73-54.
UALR
continues action on Friday as they face Nebraska at the St. Mary’s
Tournament.Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
