LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Trojans tennis team claimed a pair of wins on the final day of the KU Fall Invitational Sunday (Sept. 23) to win their respective consolation brackets.

"This was our season opener and with limited practice time, this invitational was a good starting point," head coach Abby Wilson explained. "Our girls played tough competition all weekend so it we have a better idea on what we need to work on before we come back to Kansas in a month."

With a loss on Friday and then a victory on Saturday, sophomore Michaela McShane played Maria Tortoda of South Dakota Sunday. After a close first set where McShane came out on top in a tiebreaker 7-6 (2), she had little problem in the second (6-2) to claim the straight-set victory. Senior Veronique Luksich claimed the consolation in Draw B thanks to a default by Lucia Kovalova of Wichita State.

At Singles Draw F, freshman Christel Amsallem dropped a tough 6-3, 6-4 decision to Masa Smic of Wichita State. Senior Yana Kakovkina lost both sets 6-1 to Rebecca Padrazzi of Wichita State. Junior Viktoriya Plyuta lost a heartbreaker to Laura Bouet of UMKC 6-2, 5-7, 10-5.

The UALR tennis team returns to action Oct. 19-21 when it makes the trip back to Lawrence, Kan. for a second KU Fall Invitational.
