LAWRENCE, Kan. - Freshman Christel Amsallem and sophomore Michaela McShane tied for the win in Singles Draw D as UALR wrapped up play this weekend at the second KU Fall Invite Saturday (Oct. 20).
"This was a good weekend for us," head coach Abby Wilson said. "We competed against tough universities with good teams. The girls fought hard and won some great matches."
Amsallem claimed a 6-0, 6-0 triumph on Friday before defeating Susan Lisenby of UMKC in a three-set thriller 6-0, 6-7 (4), 7-5. In the other half of the bracket in Draw D, McShane won on Friday 6-3, 6-0 before knocking off Maddie Schulte of UMKC 6-4, 6-4 to reach the finals. McShane and Ansallem did not play each other as the teammates shared the title.
Earning runner-up honors was senior Veronique Luksich in singles Draw B. After winning when her opponent retired on Friday, she claimed a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Dimitra Stariankou of UMKC. Luksich lost a pair of 6-4 sets in the finals to Ana Gomez of Kansas State.
Senior Yana Kakovkina took the consolation bracket in Singles Draw C with a pair of wins on Saturday after an opening-round loss. She won her first match 6-3, 6-2 before a straight-set triumph by identical 6-2 scores over Stefannia Russo of Northern Iowa.
In Singles Draw A, junior Viktoriya Plyuta lost in her first two matches before claiming seventh-place with a 4-6, 6-1, 10-3 win over Lea Kozulic of Drake.
In doubles play, Kakovkina teamed up with Kansas' Victoria Khanevskaya to finish third. The duo finished 1-1 on Friday before a pair of nail-biting wins by scores of 9-7, 8-6. Also finishing Friday's play 1-1, Plyuta and Luksich won 8-4 before dropping a 9-7 decision to finish 10th. Amsallem and McShane fell in both matches on the day.
The UALR tennis team returns to action in its final fall tournament in two weeks (Nov. 2-4) when the Trojans make the short trip to Jonesboro, Ark. for the ASU fall invitational.
