Quartet of Trojans Reach Semifinals at Arkansas State Fall Invite

JONESBORO, Ark. - The tennis team went 3-1 in singles play as four reached the semifinals in day one Friday (Nov. 2) at the Arkansas State Fall Tennis Invite.

At Flight 2 Singles, senior Veronique Luksich claimed a 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 triumph over Elizabeth Nyenwe of Southeast Missouri State. Freshman Christel Amsallem overcame a set deficit for a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over Jennifer Dien of Southern Illinois. Sophomore Michaela McShane overcame a 6-2 loss in the first with 6-1 and 6-0 triumphs in the final two sets for the win over Carolyn Heurth of Murray State.

Rounding out the semifinal field is senior Yana Kakovkina in Flight 3, who had a bye in the quarterfinals. Junior Viktoriya Plyuta lost at Flight 1 Singles to Heather Robinson of Southeast Missouri State 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

In doubles action, Kakovkina teamed up with Abby Plecki in Flight 5 for an 8-3 win over Janelle Fung and Chiara Stefanov of Arkansas State. Plyuta and Amsallem teamed up for a 1-1 record on the day with an 8-0 shutout of Heather Robinson and Lauren Schaper of Southeast Missouri State. McShane and Luksich dropped an 8-1 decision to Melanie Delsart and Anastacia Simons of Southern Illinois.

UALR tennis returns to action tomorrow as it continues play Saturday at the ASU Fall Invite.
