JONESBORO, Ark. -
The UALR tennis finished the fall season in style by claiming four top-3
finishes and a sixth-place at the Arkansas State Fall Invitational this past weekend
Senior Veronique Luksich led the way for the Trojans. After pulling out her first two
matches on the weekend in three, she left nothing to chance in a dominating
6-0, 6-2 win over Janie Nowland of Arkansas State in Singles Flight 2. Senior Yana Kakovkina and freshman Christel Amsallem both lost three-set
heartbreakers in the championship matches of their respective brackets.
Kakovkina lost to Anita Lee of Southern Illinois 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in Flight 3
while Amsallem fell to Ioana Teu of Arkansas State 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Sophomore Michaela McShane split her first two matches and had a bye on Sunday to take third
at Singles Flight 5. Junior Viktoriya Plyuta finished sixth at Singles Flight 1 with a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Simona
Horsikyan of Central Arkansas.
Kakovkina coupled her second-place finish in singles play
with a doubles championship in Flight 5. Teamed up with Abigail Plecki of
Southern Illinois, the duo went 4-0 on the weekend and capped the tournament
with a dominating 8-1 win over Bianca Strukelj and Stephanie Gonzalez of
Central Arkansas. McShane and Luksich finished 1-3 for the tournament with an
8-5 loss at Flight 1 Doubles. Plyuta and Amsallem had a bye on Sunday at Flight
3 and also finished its doubles matches 1-3.
Finishing the fall season, Luksich claimed a singles bracket
at ASU after Amsallem and McShane shared a singles championship at the Second
KU Fall Invite. Luksich also claimed a runner-up finish at KU while Kakovkia
and Amsallem both claimed runners-up honors at ASU.
UALR tennis takes more than a two-month hiatus before
returning to action Jan. 19, 2013 at Oral Roberts.
