TULSA, Okla. - On
the strength of a sweep from the seniors in singles play, UALR (1-0) picked up its first win
of the season by defeating Oral Roberts (0-2) 4-3 Saturday morning.
UALR won the match thanks to a 4-2 mark in singles play. The
Golden Hurricane took two of three matches at doubles to take the pair's point.
"This was a great win for us to begin the season. It was an extremely close match and it was great to get the win," head coach Abby Wilson said.
Senior Veronique Luksich dispatched Tori Dollar at first singles by identical 6-2 scores.
Classmate Yana Kakovkina beat Rachel
Scroggs at third singles 6-1, 6-2.
With the Golden Hurricane holding a slim 3-2 lead heading
into the final two singles matches, it was the two spring-season newcomers who
came up big. They only dropped one set to help UALR rally for the victory.
Sophomore Dané Vorster claimed the
6-1, 6-0 victory over Brittany Smith at fifth singles. Sophomore Kamilla Galieva swept Natalia Dollar for the Trojan victory at sixth singles.
Oral Roberts won the doubles point, but not without a fight
from UALR. Galieva and Luksich completed the perfect day with an 8-0 at third
doubles. Vorster and freshman Christel Amsallem lost a tough 8-6 match at second doubles while Kakovkina and
junior Viktoriya Plyuta fell at
first doubles 8-4.
The Trojans lost at second and fourth singles. Plyuta fell
4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to Melanie Marlin at second singles while Amsallem lost to
Marizanne Bouwer 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 at fourth singles.
UALR returns to action Sunday morning (Jan. 20) when it
travels crosstown to take on 25th-ranked Tulsa. Doubles play is to
begin at 8:30 a.m.
