FORT SMITH, Ark. -
Defaulting at sixth singles, the Trojans knew it would be facing a 1-0 deficit
before the match even started. UALR (3-1) responded by winning the doubles
point and took 4-of-5 singles matches in claiming the 5-2 win over UA-Fort
Smith (1-1) Wednesday (Jan. 30).
"I am really proud of the five girls. We had to start the
match from behind and they all came ready to play and got us the win," head
coach Abby Wilson said.
UALR responded to the deficit with a pair of doubles wins to
knot the match at one. Senior Veronique
Luksich teamed up with sophomore Michaela
McShane for the 8-4 win at first doubles. Second doubles went to sophomore Dané Vorster and
freshman Kamilla Galieva 8-2.
Tied at one, Luksich put UALR up for good with a
dominating win at first singles, 6-0, 6-2 over UAFS' Masa Podunavac. Junior Viktoriya Plyuta went an extra game to
win the first set 7-5 but cruised to take the second game 6-3 for the victory straight-setter
at second singles against Monique Melton.
Galieva only dropped one game in a straight-set victory
over Madison Carr at fourth singles. McShane won at fifth singles 6-4, 6-3 over
Abby Thompson.
The Lady Lions' Amy Belanger took a 6-3, 7-5 win over
Vorster at third singles while Whitney Hobson won by default at sixth singles
for UAFS' two points.
UALR returns to action Saturday (Feb. 2) when it hosts
Troy in North Little Rock. Match time between the two Trojans at Burns Park is
set for 11 a.m.
