LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The UALR tennis team (3-2) will
take on North Alabama (1-0) at 11 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 9) at Burns Park in North
Little Rock, Ark.
In singles
action on the season, senior Veronique
Luksich and freshman Kamilla Galieva
both have four wins each to lead the Trojans. Sophomore Michaela McShane is 3-0. Senior Yana Kakovkina and sophomore Dané Vorster both have two wins each.
In doubles,
Galieva is in the lead with a 3-1 record. Vorster and Luksich are not far behind with
two wins each.
Last year,
the Trojans traveled to Florence, Ala. and defeated UNA 6-1. It started with a
sweep in doubles. Viktoriya Plyuta and
Kakovkina started strong with a close 9-7 win over Natalie Barragan and
Victoria Rees at first doubles. Luksich and McShane followed with an 8-4 win in the second slot while Alina
Kolegova
and Nina Yates won at third doubles 8-2.
The Lions captured
its lone team point from the No. 1 singles matchup. Rees topped Plyuta 6-4,
6-4. Luksich cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 win at second singles while Kavokina won a
pair of 6-2 sets at third singles. McShane took the match at fourth singles
6-1, 6-2 with Yates claiming a 6-1, 6-2 win at fifth singles.
In their only match of the season thus far, the Lions beat
West Georgia 8-1. Bruna Viera did not even
drop a set at third singles while Barragan, Teresa Franco and Madison Patey all
won the first set 6-0 before cruising to straight-sets wins in singles play.
MacKenzie Bishop won 6-3, 6-0 at first singles.
North
Alabama swept the competition in doubles action.
UALR
returns to action next weekend when it travels to Topeka, Kan. and Kansas City,
Mo. to kick off a stretch of seven matches in eight days. The Trojans take on
Washburn Saturday (Feb. 16) at 8:30 a.m. before playing both Rockhurst and UMKC
on Sunday (Feb. 17) at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
