TOPEKA, Kan. - UALR
tennis' annual spring trip got off to a hot start thanks to UALR's (5-2) 7-0
win over Washburn (0-3) Saturday (Feb. 16). The Trojans captured all singles
and doubles matches in the victory.
UALR started off with a 1-0 lead with a trio of strong doubles
performances. Senior Yana Kakovkina
teamed up with junior Viktoriya Plyuta
for the tough 8-6 victory at first doubles. Second doubles saw senior Veronique Luksich and sophomore Michaela
McShane capture an 8-3 victory. Sophomore Dané
Vorster and freshman Kamilla
Galieva rolled to an 8-0 win at third doubles.
The Trojans did not drop a set in singles play. Luksich
(6-1) won in the first slot over Sophie O'Neill of Washburn by identical 6-1
scores. Plyuta is on a two-match winning streak and is now 3-4 on the spring
thanks to a 6-2, 6-1 win at second singles over Jodie Blackum. Galieva (6-1) clinched
the match at third singles thanks to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kirsten Holle.
Vorster moved over .500 with seven matches played
thanks to a 6-1, 6-3 win in the fourth slot over Washburn's Nzingha Banks.
UALR ended the match strong, only dropping one game in
the final two singles matches. McShane remained perfect in 2013 in five matches
with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Gwen Shepler. Freshman Christel Amsallem picked up her first win of the spring when she
blanked Rachael Hageman in the final singles match of the day.
The Trojans continue their seven matches in eight days
swing with a pair of matches Sunday (Feb. 17) in Kansas City, Mo. UALR takes on
Rockhurst at 10 a.m. before travelling across town to take on UMKC at 3 p.m.
