NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – UALR tennis (14-9, 2-3 Sun Belt) won a 4-3 thriller over Arkansas State (5-9, 0-6 SBC) to close out the 2013 regular season Wednesday (April 10) at Burns Park in North Little Rock, Ark.
The Trojans took the early lead by taking two-of-three doubles matches. Freshman Kamilla Galieva and junior Viktoriya Plyuta (2-1) won 8-5 against Biljana Miloshevska and Sofia Krsmanovic in the third slot. After ASU’s Ioana Teu and Janie Nowland defeated the UALR duo of sophomore Michaela McShane and senior Veronique Luksich (9-9) 8-2 at first doubles, the Trojans took the point with a 9-7 win at second doubles. Sophomore Dané Vorster and freshman Christel Amsallem (3-4) beat the Red Wolves’ Tamara Slijepcevic and Jess Heeps-Eriksen.
The doubles point proved to be crucial as UALR and Arkansas State split six singles matches. Luksich (14-7) fell to Slijepcevic 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 at first singles. The Trojans answered back when senior Yana Kakovkina (11-8) upended Nowland 6-3, 6-2.
The back-and-forth affair continued as Arkansas State’s Miloshevska defeated Plyuta (11-10) at third singles 6-1, 7-6 (4). UALR’s Galieva (16-7) did not drop a set to Teu at fourth singles. ASU tied the match with a win at fifth singles as Heeps-Eriksen defeated Vorster (9-12) 7-5, 1-6, 6-2.
In the deciding match at sixth singles, Amsallem (9-6) rolled over Krsmanovic 6-3, 6-2.
UALR concludes the season next week (April 17-21) when it travels to Lafayette, La. for the 2013 Sun Belt Tennis Championships.
