LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The UALR tennis team (14-9, 2-3 Sun Belt) will travel to Lafayette, La. for the 2013 Sun Belt Tennis Championships. The ninth-seeded Trojans will take on eighth-seeded FIU (3-15, 2-2 SBC) Thursday (April 18) at 8:30 a.m.

This is the highest seed for the Trojans since 2008 when they were seeded eighth. This will also be the first meeting between FIU and UALR since March 28, 2005, as the Panthers won 7-0 in Miami.
UALR closed out the 2013 regular season last week (April 10) with a 4-3 defeat over Arkansas State for its third-consecutive win. It was the first over its rival from Jonesboro since the 2006 season.
The Trojans won the doubles point against the Red Wolves. It proved to be crucial as UALR and Arkansas State split six singles matches. After the Trojans and Red Wolves went back and forth all match, freshman Christel Amsallem closed the door on ASU with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at sixth singles.

Freshman Kamilla Galieva (16-7) and senior Veronique Luksich (14-7) finished the regular season with the best records on the team. Senior Yana Kakovkina and junior Viktoriya Plyuta both have 11 wins each while sophomore Dané Vorster and Amsallem have nine wins apiece.
In doubles, sophomore Michaela McShane and Luksich are in the lead with a 9-9 record.
FIU enters Thursdays match with a 3-15 record overall and a 2-2 record in Sun Belt play. Leading the Panthers is Giuletta Boha with a 12-11 singles record. Carlotta Orlando (10-5) is the only other FIU player with a winning singles record.
In doubles action, the duo of Rita Maisak and Aleksand Trifunovic lead the Panthers with a 6-5 record. Boha and Maisak finished the season 3-2
The only common opponent between UALR and FIU is Arkansas State. The Panthers beat ASU 5-2 on Feb. 24 in Miami.

UALR will look to snap FIU’s streak of eight-straight appearances in the SBC Championship match.
The winner will take on top-seeded North Texas Friday at 8:30 a.m.
