LAFAYETTE, La. – UALR (15-9) moves on to the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Tennis Tournament with a 4-0 win over FIU (3-16) Thursday morning (April 18).
The Trojans took the doubles point in exciting fashion over the Panthers. Junior Viktoriya Plyuta and Kamilla Galieva (3-1) won their third-consecutive match at third doubles with an 8-1 win over FIU’s Michelle Sabado and Lotte Gras. The Panthers struck back at first doubles when Aleksand Trifunovic and Carlotta Orlando bested UALR’s duo of sophomore Michaela McShane and senior Veronique Luksich (9-10).
The doubles point came down to a tiebreaker at the second spot. Sophomore Dané Vorster and freshman Christel Amsallem (4-4) won the tiebreak 7-2 over FIU’s Giuletta Boha and Magali Holt and won the match 9-8 (2).
Up 1-0, UALR made quick work of the Panthers to win its sixth shutout of the season. Vorster (10-12) beat Gras at fifth singles 6-1, 6-1. Amsallem (10-6) opened up a UALR 3-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-0 win at sixth singles over Sabado. Plyuta (12-10) ended the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Holt at fourth singles.
With the victory, UALR halts FIU’s streak of eight-straight appearances in the championship match of the SBC Tournament.
In other unfinished matches, Luksich trailed Orlando at first singles 6-4, 1-1. Senior Yana Kakovkina trailed 6-1, 3-2 to Trifunovic at second singles. Galieva and Boha were tied at five in the first set at third singles.
UALR returns to action Friday (April 19) when it takes on top-seeded and 60th-ranked North Texas. Match time is set for 8:30 a.m.
