Release: 03/02/2012

MARTIN, Tenn. - The UALR Trojans (6-3) took the lead with a two-run first inning and closed the door on UT Martin (3-7) with a six-run seventh, as UALR topped the Skyhawks by an 11-3 final at Skyhawk Park on Friday. Junior Chance Cleveland improved to 3-0 after giving up three runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings of work, and sophomore Ben Crumpton picked up his fifth-straight multi hit game with a 2-for-4 effort that included two walks, two RBI and three runs scored.

The UALR offense put up 11 hits on the day, led by Crumpton and a pair of two-hit performances by juniors Myles Parma and David Guarno. Parma went 2-for-5 with a run scored, while Guarno was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run.

Cleveland's three earned runs were his first of the season, as the Pine Bluff, Ark., native began the year with 13.0 innings of shutout ball. UT Martin put up one run in the fourth and two in the sixth to pull within two, but junior Bubba Cooper came on in relief to throw 2.0 scoreless innings and sophomore Ryan Montgomery struck out a pair of batters in the ninth to secure the win.

UALR got on the board when a double by Guarno plated junior Chris Burk to make it a 1-0 game in the top of the first. Guarno scored later in the inning to push the UALR lead to two after another double by senior Sean Bignall.

Crumpton made it 3-0 in the top of the third when he walked to leadoff the inning, then scored on a single by Burk through the left side. In the top of the fourth, an RBI single by Crumpton scored senior Cameron Bentley to put UAL R in front 4-0.

The Skyhawks got on the board when Jordan Owen led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to left field and scored on a sacrifice fly later in the inning. UALR got the run back in the top of the sixth, as Crumpton walked, stole second and scored on an error to make it a 5-1 game.

UT Martin pulled with two in the bottom of the sixth, when the Skyhawks put up two runs on five hits to make it a 5-3 game. UALR answered with a six-run explosion in the top half of the seventh to push the margin to 11-3.

A walk issued to senior Nick Rountree was followed with a single off the bat of senior Greg Garcia to give the Trojans two baserunners with one out of the board. Sophomore Bryson Thionnet doubled to score both runners, and a double by Crumpton to left center plated Thionnet for the third run of the frame. Parma then drew a walk and an error by the UT Martin second baseman allowed Burk to reach base and Crumpton to score, making it 9-3. A balk by Skyhawk hurler Stu Jones brought home Parma later in the inning, and an RBI single by Guarno plated the inning's sixth and final run.

Starter Alec Mills was handed the loss for UT Martin, dropping his record to 1-2 on the season.  The Skyhawks out hit the Trojans, 12-11, but committed four errors on the night compared to just one for UALR.

UALR and UT Martin return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. Junior Blake Huffman (1-1) will get the start for the Trojans, while senior Willie Frederick (1-0) will be on the mound for the Skyhawks.
