MARTIN, Tenn. - The UALR Trojans (8-3) completed its sweep of the UT Martin Skyhawks (3-9) with a 12-11 win in ten innings on Sunday afternoon at Skyhawk Park. Trailing 11-5 after four innings of play, the Trojans ripped off five runs over the final five frames before plating the game winner on a solo home run by senior Sean Bignall in the top of the tenth inning.
The two teams combined for 34 total hits on the afternoon, with the Trojans outhitting the Skyhawks by an 18-16 tally. Bignall and senior Nick Rountree paced the UALR bats with three hits apiece, while sophomore Kaleb Jobe also chipped in with three base hits. Bignall tacked on five RBI and four runs scored thanks in part to a three-run homer in the top of the sixth.
UALR got on the board when it scored a pair of runs in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. After sophomore Ben Crumpton singled and junior Myles Parma walked to start the inning, UT Martin hurler Ben Lozopone hit back-to-back batters to bring in the Trojans' first run of the day. A sacrifice fly by Bignall later in the inning plated the second run of the frame to make it 2-0, UALR.
UT Martin answered with a three-run second inning in the bottom of the second before adding another run in the third to take a 4-2 lead. The Trojans put up three runs in the top of the fourth to retake the lead, but the Skyhawks countered with a seven-run inning in the bottom half of the frame thanks to seven hits and one UALR error.
Trailing 11-5 after four innings of play, UALR got one back in the top of the fifth when an RBI single by Jobe scored Bignall to make it 11-6. Bignall's three-run blast in the top of the sixth made it 11-9, and the Trojans evened the score with two runs in the top of the eighth.
Juniors Chris Burk and David Guarno led off the eighth with singles, while the next batter, Bignall, was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior Greg Garcia singled to right field to bring in the first run of the inning, and Rountree drove in the inning's second run to knot the score at 11.
After Bignall hit his second homer of the game in the top of the tenth, sophomore Bryson Thionnet struck out two to close the door on the Skyhawks and complete the UALR sweep.
Thonnet picked up the win for the Trojans after putting in 2.1 innings of relief work to end the game. Five different pitchers took the mound for the Trojans on the day, with sophomore Ethan Schlechte getting the start. Freshman Cameron Allen gave up just one run on five hits in 4.0 innings of relief.
UALR returns to action on Tuesday with the first of two midweek games against South Dakota State at Gary Hogan Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
