- The UALR baseball team (3-0) completed its sweep of the UAPB Golden Lions
(0-3) on Sunday with a 13-4 win at Gary Hogan Field. The Trojan bats produced
14 hits on the day, led by a 3-for-5 effort from junior Chris Burk, while junior Bubba
Cooper picked up the win after surrendering just two hits and no runs in
2.2 innings of relief work.
Burk's day at the plate included a double, one RBI and
two runs scored, while junior Myles
Parma went 2-for-4 on the day with a solo homer, two walks and two runs
scored. Junior Ben Crumpton, getting
his first career start at shortstop, went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Junior Blake Johnson went 2-for-5 with two
runs and three RBI, and senior Cameron
Bentley gave the Trojans their fifth multi-hit performance of the day with
a 2-for-4 effort, highlighted by a triple, to go along with three RBI.
Schlechte went 4.1 innings and surrendered four runs, though just one
earned, on six hits while getting the start for UALR. Stanten Jones was saddled
with the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) while walking seven
batters in 3.0 innings as the Sunday starter for the Lions.
The two teams traded runs in their first set of at bats
to make it a 1-1 game after the opening frame. UAPB got on the board when
leadoff man Sean Samsa singled to center to start the game and later came home
on a Trojan throwing error to give the Lions their first lead of the series.
UALR answered on a sacrifice fly by senior Nick
Rountree that scored Parma from third and evened the score at one.
The Trojans went on to put up five runs over their next
two sets of at bats. First, junior Bryson
Thionnet scored from third while Bentley held up the UAPB infield in a
rundown to give UALR its first lead at the end of the
second inning. Then, the Trojans erupted with a four-run inning in the bottom of the
third that included three hits and was capped by a two-RBI single by Johnson that
made it 6-1 at the end of three.
The Golden Lions responded with two runs in the fourth
and another in the fifth to make it a 6-4 ballgame, but the Trojans scored
twice in the fifth and three times in the sixth to build an 11-4 lead.
An RBI double by Johnson scored senior Sean Bignall for the fifth inning's
first run, while Bentley's triple plated Johnson for the second score of the
frame. In the bottom of the sixth, Parma led off the inning with his second
home run of the year, a solo shot to right, that made it 9-4. Burk then singled
up the middle and stole second before being brought home on an RBI single by
junior David Guarno, who later came
home on a wild pitch for the frame's final run.
The Trojans tacked on two more in the bottom half of
the ninth to reach the game's 13-4 final. A two-RBI single by Bentley through
the right side plated Johnson and Thionnet, who reached on a fielder's choice
and walk, respectively, earlier in the frame.
Velasquez and freshman Matt Brown
each put in an inning of work for the Trojan pitching staff. The pair struck
out two batters apiece, with Velasquez pitching the entire eighth before giving
way to Brown at the start of the ninth.
UALR will return to action with a midweek contest
against Louisiana Tech on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Gary Hogan Field. First pitch
is slated for 3 p.m.
