Release: 03/26/2013

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Senior Chris Burk went 2-for-4 with five RBI to lead the UALR offense, as the Trojans (11-14) snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 10-4 win over Stephen F. Austin (11-13) on Tuesday at Jaycees Field. Fueled by a grand slam from Burk, UALR scored six runs in its first set of at-bats before adding two more in its second and cruising to its first true road win of the season.

The UALR bats combined for 11 hits on the night, led by senior Blake Johnson’s 3-for-5 effort at the plate. In addition to Burk, senior Myles Parma and sophomore Sam Vogel chipped in with two hits apiece. Vogel totaled two RBI on the night thanks to a solo homer in the top of the first and an RBI single in the top of the eighth. Along with Burk, juniors Ben Crumpton and Austin Pfeiffer scored two runs each for UALR.

Freshman Chad Bradford (2-2) got the start and went 6.1 innings while surrendering three runs on nine hits to pick up the win for the Trojans. Juniors Travis McDonald and Dillon Moritz along with senior Tyler Buckley comprised the UALR bullpen on the night and combined to give up just one run on one hit over the final 2.2 innings.

Chris Hassold was handed the loss for Stephen F. Austin after surrendering eight runs on six hits in 3.0 innings of work.

The Trojans got off to a strong start, exploding for six runs in their first set of at-bats. Crumpton walked to leadoff the game and then moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Pfeiffer drew a walk and Johnson singled to center field to load the bases for UALR. An RBI single by senior Myles Parma gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead and kept the bases juiced for Burk, whose grand slam to left centerfield put UALR up 5-0. A solo homer by Vogel gave the Trojans their sixth and final run of the inning.

UALR added two more runs in the top of the second. The Trojans loaded the bases on two singles and a drawn walk to start the inning, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Burk was dropped by the SFA right fielder, allowing Crumpton and Pfeiffer to cross home plate.

A two-run homer by Hunter Dozier got two runs back for SFA in the bottom of the third, but after three scoreless innings on both sides, the Trojans added their ninth run in the top of the seventh. Clark led off the inning with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Thionnet and Pfieffer both drew walks to load the bases, and Johnson drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring home Clark.

SFA added a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Dozier, but UALR answered with another run of its own in the top of the eighth. Burk singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Kaleb Jobe. After Clark drew a walk, Vogel singled up the middle to score Burk and make it a 10-3 game.

The ‘Jacks made it a six-run game in the bottom of the eighth when an RBI single by Rene Moreda plated Richardo Sanchez to make cut SFA’s deficit to 10-4. But the ‘Jacks would get no closer, as Buckley retired the ninth in order to close things out.

UALR returns to action when it resumes Sun Belt play by hosting ULM at Gary Hogan Field in a three-game series this weekend. Play between the Trojans and the Warhawks begins Friday at 6 p.m.
