Release: 03/31/2013

LITTLE ROCK – The UALR baseball team (14-14, 3-6 SBC) completed the sweep of ULM (10-18, 1-8 SBC) with a 13-3 win over the Warhawks in seven innings on Sunday at Gary Hogan Field. After early-morning rain once again forced the game to start on a delay, the Trojans trailed early before a seven-run fifth put them ahead to stay.

ULM led 3-1 after both teams combined for four runs in the first inning of play. After three and a half scoreless frames, the Trojans put up seven in the bottom of the fifth, two more in the sixth and three in the bottom half of the seventh.

Junior Ethan Schlechte got the start and picked up the win after going 6.0 innings and surrendering just three runs on four hits. Schlechte struck out six on the day while improving to 3-3 on the year. Freshman Jesse Harbin made UALR’s lone relief appearance for the second-straight game and allowed no runs on one hit in his only inning of work.

Three different Trojans finished with two hits on the day. Junior Ben Crumpton finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Austin Pfeiffer went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored, while junior Kaleb Jobe was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Bryson Thionnet scored three runs on the day, while sophomore Sam Vogel and junior John Clark added two runs each. Senior Blake Johnson finished with four RBI.

ULM’s Brandon Alexander and Judd Edwards led off the game with back-to-back singles, and Corben Green drove in the inning’s first run on a RBI single up the middle to give the Warhawks a quick 1-0 lead. Taylor Abdalla then ripped a two-RBI double to left-center field that brought home Edwards and Green to give ULM a 3-0 lead before the game’s first out was recorded.

The Trojans were able to get a run back in the bottom half of the first. Crumpton led off the game with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a deep fly ball to right by Pfeiffer. An RBI groundout by Johnson allowed Crumpton to cross home plate and make it a 3-1 game after an inning of play.

After three and half scoreless innings, the UALR offense exploded for seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the fifth. Three singles to lead off the inning by Burk, Clark and Jobe loaded the bases for Vogel, who doubled to center to bring home the first two UALR runs of the inning. A single by Crumpton plated Jobe for the third UALR score of the frame and kept the bases loaded. Pfeiffer then drew a walk to advance all runners and plate the inning’s fourth run, and Johnson ripped a bases-clearing double to right center to give the Trojans an 8-3 lead after five innings of play.

A two-RBI single by Pfeiffer in the bottom of the sixth put the Trojans up 10-3. In the bottom of the seventh, an RBI double by Jobe and and RBI single by Thionnet plated the first two UALR runs of the inning. Pfeiffer then singled through the left side to score Thionnet and bring the game to its 13-3 final.

UALR will try to make it five-straight wins when it travels to Conway to face UCA on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
